SLEEP APNEA AND SNORING TREATMENT

In Relaxed Atmosphere of Our Dental Clinic Downtown Ottawa & Ottawa South

Dr. Kubicka says:

Sleep disorders that involve difficulty breathing during sleep are classified as Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD). Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common disorder of this type, however there are a number of variations of sleep apnea.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing during sleep because of obstructions in the airway. People with this common and serious sleep disorder frequently snore loudly or make choking noises as they try to breathe..

Obstructive Sleep Apnea poses risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), it may also increase the risk of recurrent heart attack, and abnormal heartbeats, such as atrial fibrillation, as well as it increases the risk of stroke. More importantly, people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea have a greater risk of sudden cardiac death.

Snoring. This loud noise occurs as you sleep when the flow of air from breathing makes the tissues in the back of your throat vibrate. Snoring can be a nuisance for your partner or anyone nearby, but more importantly, it can cause abonormally low level of blood oxygen (hypoxemia) and gradual oxygen starvation of your brain.

Central Sleep Apnea Central sleep apnea causes your body to decrease or stop breathing during sleep in an off-and-on cycle. Central sleep apnea is caused by a problem in the brain or heart, rather than a blockage of the airway.

Child Sleep Apnea About two percent of young children have obstructive sleep apnea that requires treatment, which is most common in preschoolers when the tonsils and adenoids are large compared to the throat.

Infant Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea in infants may be due to a developmental problem that results from immature brainstem or it may be caused by another medical condition. Breathing problems from sleep apnea may cause severe complications for infants.

Sleep related groaning Sleep related groaning, also called catathrenia, occurs when you make a prolonged sound that resembles groaning while you exhale during sleep. It is fairly rare and more common in men. Sleep related groaning is most bothersome to your bed partner.

Sleep related Bruxism involves the grinding or clenching of teeth during sleep. It is common for the jaw to contract while you sleep. When these contractions are too strong, they produce the sound of tooth grinding. This can cause dental damage by wearing the teeth down. In most severe cases, hundreds of events can occur during the night. In milder cases, the grinding may vary from night to night. Severe bruxism may briefly disturb your sleep. However, only at rare times it will cause you to fully wake up. Loud sounds caused by the grinding of teeth can be very unpleasant, and also can disturb the sleep of your bed partner. It can occur during all stages of sleep.

Preventive Family Dentistry at Dr. Kubicka Family Dental Clinic helps every member of your family maintain excellent oral health and healthy sleep behaviours throughout life.

Contact us to schedule an appointment for yourself or your child to identify any airway or breathing disorders. Every patient of any age should have proper airway examination and evaluation of breathing function done. Our primary duty is to promote proper nasodiaphragmatic breathing for every patient as a prevention of serious health problems and future orthodontic treatments.

Remember that regular checkups not only keep teeth clean, they offer the best way to ensure all problems related to the overall health of your teeth and breathing are identified and treated early.

Treatment Options for Snoring and/or Sleep Apnea

Surgical techniques used to remove respiration-impairing structures have shown only moderate success rates (20 - 40 %). For the majority of snorers, the most affordable, non-invasive, comfortable and effective snoring solution remains a dentist-prescribed, oral snoring preventative device, such as Somnodent.

SomnoDent is proven effective, and has been recommended as a first line of treatment, for people with mild and moderate obstructive sleep apnea, but is also being prescribed to patients with Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnae who are CPAP introlerant (Continuous Positive Air Pressure).
